What you know is not enough

It’s springtime! Mother’s Day is approaching. The weather is warming up, and I’m back to my morning walks. It’s a peaceful time when I reflect on things I hear (and then share my musings with all of you!)

Today’s inspiration comes from a story about an art teacher who was arbitrating an argument between two of her students. One student was annoyed because another student was using “her color palette.”

I thought the teacher’s response was brilliant. She said, “The colors are free. It’s what you do with them that makes you an artist.”

YES! Knowledge is free. Information about how to perform a skill or a task is easily accessible to anyone seeking to learn.

Sometimes I deliver a training I’ve taught hundreds of times and think to myself, “Everyone knows this.” Truthfully, some of them do. Yet, every time, someone who knows the information will come up to me and say, “I needed this reminder.” Sharing they know what would be effective in a situation, yet they don’t do it.

The things I teach in coaching or training are on Google. There are millions of articles you can find on whatever topic you seek. But it’s how you choose to apply the knowledge, build the habit, and communicate your color palette across your team that matters.

Knowing is not enough. Applying, integrating, and taking action is what makes an impact.
